"When
looking at the figure and/or forms with color, whether it is humble or grand,
mundane, or extraordinary, I always have a particular, personal reaction to
them. My paintings are portraits of response to the emotion of the subject,
rather than portraits of the person itself. The visual language of the portrayed
faces and partial bodies painted with acrylic, confined by the square, dwelling
in multiple color fields allows me to react to the image on a very formal level.
It is the bodys language and the facial expressions that serve as the primary
vehicle to arrive at the narrative. I am fascinated that the figure, depicted on
a two-dimensional surface can provoke universal and intuitive recognition, as
well as such a wide range of reactions. I appreciate the random qualities in the
faces that I paint, internal and external, male and female, child and adult.
I
continue to be interested in a mixed-media approach to painting, which includes
mixing acrylic, marker, pastel with water, and enamels. While a rich artistic
tradition for this type of work exists, I feel the approach for the painter
grappling with these issues continues to evolve."
