Lou Monti was born in Tonapah
Nevada. He has lived in Santa Fe New Mexico and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
He currently resides in Palm Springs California . He received a B.S. degree
from St. Louis University and a Masters degree in anthropology in Missiouri.
As a college professor, he
lectured in primitive culture archeology and comparative religions. He now
devotes his time to creating his art and travels for inspiration. He continues
to study ethnology and remains interested in spiritual belief systems.
Monti is represented in
numerous private and corporate collections in the United States, Europe and
South America.
With his "Ancient Walls
series" Monti continues his investigation of the vestiges of past
civilizations and lost thought.
The directness of this imagery
is sensuous and intellectual. As with all Monti's work, there is an element of
mystery. Something always remains hidden beneath the surface. The mythical
past eludes us but awaits discovery.
Using the ancient technique of
fresco, layers of color are superimposed on wet plaster which create an
atmosphere for the individual color fields. Each panel carries the weight of
the vestigial architecture and its endurance through time. The eroding surface
allows the past to come through often with ghostly images. Black lines create
the spacial ambiguities allowing entrance into the present.
These paintings originate in
the archaic past but are completely modern in their form and content.
